Cosy Pubs: The Britannia Inn

Christmas is certainly the most wonderful time of year, and its certainly my favourite. But, in the run up to the 25th, it can all start to feel a bit overwhelming: presents for friends and family, arrangements to be made and, if you’re anything like us, masses of food to cook. And after its all done, you can feel like you deserve another holiday, and Spring seems a long way off.

The Lakes is certainly one place where the January blues feel a lot easier to bear. A dusting of frost and snow only improve the stunning scenery, and a patch of bad weather is just an excuse to stay in, crack open and bottle of wine and have a wonderfully cosy break.

If you do want to venture out, however, the Lakes is renowned for its cosy and friendly pubs, serving excellent, hearty meals and lots of local ale to wash it down with. And the best thing about coming to stay at Colwith is that you don’t even have to get in the car to find one of these havens.

A personal favourite is the Britannia Inn in Elterwater, surely one of the Lake District most picture-postcard perfect villages. The Britannia is an easy but varied and visually stunning walk from Colwith and boasts log fires, welcoming staff and what must be one of the best Lamb Henrys in the world (seriously, you must order this if you go!).
